OH, born in 1825, son of Peter and Mary (Blosser) Stemen, who were natives of VA and Pennsylvania respectively; they were married in Fairfield County, OH, and came to Marion Township, this county, in 1838, where they lived and died. Our subject, who is the eldest in their family, was married, January 27, 1848, to Miss Jane Sakemiller of Sugar Creek Township, born in 1827 in Fairfield County, OH, daughter
of Jacob and Rachael (Fry) Sakemiller (both now deceased), natives of Pennsylvania, and of German descent, and who came to this county in 1831. To our subject and wife have been born twelve children: Isaac, Mary, Rachel, Jacob, Peter (deceased), Andrew, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Anna, Samson, Simeon and Noah. Mr. and Mrs. Stemen are members of the Mennonite Church. He was a deacon.

General Notes: Moses Brenneman, born May 4, 1846 in Fairfield Co., Ohio, died January 22, 1923. On October 1, 1870, he married Mary A. Stemen of Elida. She was born August 20, 1850. She died August 5, 1925. Both were buried in Salem Cemetery. They were Mennonites. At the age of nine years, he came with his parents from Franklin Co., to Sugar Creek Twp., Allen Co., where he grew to manhood on the 175 acre farm that his father had purchased soon after settling in the county.

Soon after his marriage, he purchased 74 acres of the old homestead from his father, which he improved and lived on until his death. Mr. Brenneman was a model farmer of his day, and a respected citizen in the community where he lived.

At the age of 20, he united with the Mennonite Church in Allen Co. and on the 10th of September 1885, was ordained to the ministry in which he served faithfully until his death. He was naturally of a strong spiritual disposition, and by some was thought inclined to look On the serious side of life, yet always of a cheerful nature even when under severe trials. In the church he stood firm in his convictions, yet could yield to others when he found himself in the wrong.

General Notes: Andrew Brenneman was born February 7, 1875 near Elida and married Elizabeth Durr. She was born April 9, 1879 and died from the accidental explosion of oil in a coal stove on May 21, 1935. He was a farmer. On May 21, 1905, he was ordained to the ministry at the Pike Church near Elida, Ohio. A few years later he moved with his family to Plainview, Texas where he served as pastor for a few years. He later returned to his former home at Elida and served as pastor of the Central Mennonite Church for many years. He later married Myrta Brunk.

Andrew J. married Sarah Elizabeth Durr, daughter of John N Durr and Jane Steele. Sarah Elizabeth was born on 9 Apr 1879 and died on 21 May 1935 at age 56. The cause of her death was accidental explosion of oil in a coal stove.

General Notes: John M. Brenneman's Childhood

After John's birth, March 31, 1877, his grandfather, also named John M., came to see him. Speaking in Pennsylvania Dutch he said, "I came to see Johnny," so they named him after his grandfather.

John started to school when he was quite young and in order to keep his oldest brother Andrew company. Since neither of them could speak English well, Andrew helped John interpret. This sometimes caused problems. Pennsylvania Dutch was spoken at home.

John's brother Sim was larger than John for a while even though he was younger. One time when they were being weighed, John put stones in his pocket to weigh more.

In those days, children had to work. They were given various jobs to do. The oldest brother Andrew, would divide the work and let each take their choice. Then he would take what was left, if any, he always got the best of them. He would say, "You churn so many turns and I'll finish." Often, the butter would be done before his turn ever came.

John liked fun, and loved to tease. He especially found amusement in flipping his sister's pigtails or opening their apron strings.

He was especially fond of singing. Someone came to church to give singing lessons. John joined the bass section, but was soon told he needed to sing soprano for awhile more. The teacher was correct, as he continued singing lead the rest of his life. He enjoyed participating in a quartet including his brother Alpheus, brother-in-law Menno Good, and cousin, Christ Brenneman, for many years. (John's son Simon imitated this quartet to near perfection in a recording studio and fooled many people who remembered this quartet that had never been recorded.)

John especially enjoyed visiting his grandparents and his aunts and uncles. He also worked for some of them before he married. He spent several years working in Virginia before he married. He was a farmer all his life imitated had great concern for his family.

I started for Va. Moses took me to the train. Uncle Sampo was also at the Depot. Susan Brenneman and Anna Mary Burkholder came along. Also. Mr Weavers and Mrs Peifer were on the same rain. Got to Cin. At about 9 o'clock I rode on top of Bus from one depot to the other.

Got to Harrisonburg at about 2 AM. Susanna was at the Depot. I rode out with Oscar Burkholder and went to Dan Wengers and staid there all night. Susanna was there also.

Dan Wenger took me to Harrisonburg and got my trunk and went to uncle Crists from there I went back where the boys were cutting wheat and ate supper at Lewis' and went to Saul Heatwoles over night.

Sun. June 22, 1902
I atended SS and preaching at Weavers on Sun. and went to Walter Heatwoles after preaching. And in the evening went to singing at Weavers Church and after singing went to Saul Heatwoles over night. L. J. Heatwole preached. Three persons were baptized.

Marriage Notes: About Anna and John's Courtship Days

One Sunday when I was a little girl, my parents were invited to the Moses Brenneman house for dinner. When Mary Brenneman called the boys in from the barn for the meal, there were a whole row of them. I asked mother Barbara, "Which one of the boys is the best looking?" Mother hushed me and told me to be quiet, but I said anyhow, "I think John is." I was only a child at the time.

Years later I attended revival meetings at the Blanchard Church, miles from home. I went with several others in a borrowed carriage. Later when John arrived, he joined us. then he asked me if I would ride home with him. I said, "Oh, I guess." Then when we got home, he asked if he could come and see me, and I said, "Okay." I must have been sixteen or a little older and I fell in love with him.

One evening, another couple asked John if they and us could trade dates. He asked what I thought about it, and I didn't want to but said he could if he wanted, but I wouldn't. He didn't either. I thought you should only date one person at a time.

It was a custom for the girl to give her date a little snack, so one night after church, I gave John my usual snack--onions and butter bread! He looked a little surprised and rather embarrassed, but ate what I had given him. I found out he liked onions. Ha!

When we became engaged, John asked me when I wanted the wedding. It was close to Christmas and I said, "Christmas." He agreed.

At our marriage, I became so touched by the singing of "Blest Be the Tie That Binds" at the conclusion of the ceremony by Uncle John Shenk, that when my parents congratulated us, I burst into tears--they just rolled. Later John told me he felt bad because he thought I was sorry I had married him. But I was just happy. I told him I loved him.

In all my life, I never saw anyone who could take his place. I loved him and didn't want any outside interference.

Brenneman, Moses H., son of Moses and Mary (Steman) Brenneman, was born near Elida, Ohio, March 31, 1881; died at the Lima (Ohio) Memorial Hospital, April 4, 1962, following a cerebral thrombosis; aged 81 y. 4 d. On Oct. 12, 1919, he was married to Lillie Mae Geiger, who died Dec. 22, 1957. Six brothers also preceded him in death. Surviving are 2 daughters (Geneva-Mrs. Orrie Harshbarger, West Liberty; and Gladys-Mrs. Hiram Brenneman, Lima, Ohio), 2 brothers (Andrew and Alpheus), and 2 sisters (Mary and Martha), all of Elida; and 5 grandchildren. He was a member of the Salem Church, where funeral services were held, in charge of Richard E. Martin.

Surviving is one sister (Mary). She was a member of Central Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held at Pike Mennonite Church in charge, of T. M. Brenneman and Kenneth Benner; interment in Salem Cemetery.

On May 3, 1928, he was married to Rowena Leedy, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter (Patricia-Mrs. Fidel Santiago), one son (Donald), 5 grandchildren, his stepmother (Mrs. Myrta Brenneman), one sister (Esther-Mrs. Durbin Yoder), and 3 stepsisters (Olive Geil, Mary-Mrs. Paul Yoder, and Zelma Brunk). He was ordained to the ministry in 1938 and served churches in Pehuajo and General Villegas in Argentina, Bayshore in Sarasota, Fla., and North Goshen, Goshen, Ind. In 1949 he was ordained bishop and served the congregations of Bayshore, Sarasota, Fla., Southmost, in southern Florida, and the churches in Puerto Rico. He was a member of North Goshen Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on June 11, in charge of J. C. Wenger, Howard Charles, and Kenneth Benner; interment in Salem Cemetery, Elida, Ohio.

Simon Peter Brenneman's Childhood

Teasing was very evident in my home. My older sisters used to call me "Simon Peter, Mary Alice, Jane Maria, La Doris" and emphasize the last name, "Sophia," the most. It all rhymed to them -- to me as I stood for half a day washing the dishes mom had dirtied the day before preparing for market in Lima. She baked bread, made cakes and butter, cheese, etc.

I never learned to like to peddle our produce in Lima. One time me and my brother Johnny made a special when we got tired of selling strawberries. When I told the lady they were ten cents a piece or two for a quarter, she gave me a quick lesson in mathematics!

We always seemed to have a lot of fun and a lot of scraps. I especially remember Mom asking us, with her arms folded against her chest and her palms extended, "which wall do you want me to paste you against?" Dad never could discipline us kids, he was just too soft hearted.

I remember a friend I had, Art Furry. I taught him how to cook frog legs in the sun! He didn't notice that I dropped mine in the road and only pretended to eat--while he munched away on his raw offering.

Sometimes when I was lucky enough to work away from home and make a little money, mom would make me share it with Clara. She said she had to stay home and therefore should get something for it. I didn't see it that way. Mom won.

My parents were always concerned with our welfare and wanted us to go to church. Once when Walter played sheep with Johnny and me, Dad wouldn't let us go to church for several Sundays. In order to be his little sheep, he said we would have to shear us--one swipe with the clippers from ear to ear and from our nose in front straight back over the head to the neckline! We did look funny.

He had been a masonry contractor and a farmer. He was a member of Lima Community Church of the Nazarene, where he enjoyed singing and taking part in the choir. For several years he portrayed Simon the Zealot in The Last Supper drama at Northside Mennonite Church. He was a member of the Lima Board of Realtors and the Ohio Auctioneers Association. He adored his grandchildren and prayed much for them. He loved to travel and play golf. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Lions and Tigers and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Survivors also include two sons, Thomas L. (Dorothy) Brenneman of Canby, Ore., and Dr. James (Sharon) Brenneman of Lima; two daughters, Sally (Dr. George) Oyer of Elida and Teresa "Tesa" Brenneman of Wapakoneta; a brother, Andrew (Ada) Brenneman of Elida; two sisters, Clara Kauffman of West Liberty and Luella (Wendell) Miller of Elida; seven grandchildren, Heather Brenneman, Kari (Dan) Ferguson, Aaron (Nicole) Brenneman, Abigail Oyer, Nicole Brenneman, Leah (Gideon) Foster and Anna Oyer; a great-grandchild, Madison; several nieces and nephews; and an extended family of exchange students, whom he enjoyed, Robin Garn of Germany, Nise Manicardi of Brazil and Atsko Amao of New York City.
He was preceded in death by seven siblings, Blanche, Victor, Walter and Ralph Brenneman, Grace Yoder, and Fred and John Brenneman.
Services will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Dr. Wayne Sharpes and pastors Bobby Green and Dan Huckins will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Elida.

To Our Descendents and loved ones:

Our first date was in July of 1945. Si first remembers seeing me at my high school graduation. I remember seeing him the fall before at the annual American Grange Carnival in Elida. He did not make a big impression on me at the time because he was pretending to be drunk for the amusement of his friends.

I was surprised when he called me for a date, but we got along fine from the beginning. Our first date was to Blanchard Mennonite Church and was a double affair with Bob & Mary Louise Troyer on their first outing as well. They were married just three weeks before we were.

We chose April 21, 1946 (Easter Sunday) for our wedding date, hoping Si's brother John could make it home from the service in time to perform the duties of best man. He made it with only a few weeks to spare. I chose my sister Betty for my matron of honor. Notice in the wedding picture how Aunt Betty's face looks full--she was still swollen from her bout with mumps. Her sons John and Jesse had given them to her just after she married Alex the second of April that year.

I was apprehensive about getting the mumps myself. Old Dr. Thut said there wasn't any danger as I had them once as a child on one side. Whoops! Yes, I got them again. We came home from our honeymoon in the Smoky Mountains on Thursday. Saturday morning I was terribly swollen and didn't get out of bed for two weeks.

We had our ups and downs in those early days. No indoor plumbing and coping with coal stoves made living not exactly as you know it today. I cooked on a two burner hot plate and a laundry stove for a year. But we really didn't mind. We had things as nice as others we knew.

Tom was born and an opportunity to buy the farm on Pioneer Road came. We even borrowed the down payment, moving in March of 1948. This started our development of the farm with Si having to have a Grade-A milk house before I got a bathroom in the house. I never really understood that, but he did. It also started Si's love affair with Jersey cows.

He worked night and day to make ends meet and ever expand our holdings. Most of the time he worked two jobs (brick work, farming, butchering, auctioneering, real estate). When I met him, he was a route salesman for Plezol Bread Co. Grandpa Yant like him and asked him if he wanted to work for him and learn the carpenter trade. Daddy later decided that Si liked the masonry trade better and helped him develop skills in that capacity. He later worked as his masonry foreman on one of the church jobs.

By this time, Jim and Sally had joined our family circle. When at age six, Jim developed rheumatic fever, the doctor told us it would be good to take him south for the winter. We bought a 27 ft. house trailer and packed our little family together and left, traveling on Thanksgiving day to Florida. There, Si worked the masonry trade. He returned the week after Easter.

Si developed back trouble and we were hiring most of the farming done, what I couldn't do. We then decided to sell the farm and build a hew house, the split level. By the time we were ready to move, Teresa rounded out the family.

Several years later when I developed back trouble also, we sold that house and built another next door, sans steps and basement. We lived there about ten years.

Si's auction business was increasing and we thought we would fill the winter months by opening an auction house in the winter of 1962.. The boys helped by hauling and moving furniture. Sally operated the food concession while young Tesa circulated in the crowd. I clerked the sales. It was very successful and many people hate to see us close the doors in October of 1967.

By this time, Tom had graduated and gone off to Goshen College and Si had gotten his Real Estate license with Mary Berry. After nine months with her, he transferred his license to Lockwood Real Estate, where he stayed 12 years. He developed a close friendship with the owner, Dale Lockwood.

Jim was soon off to school and our girls were growing up. The boys met and married their wives, with Tom spending two years in voluntary service teaching in Puerto Rico before he was married.

Sally decided to go to school in South Carolina and there by started many vacation trips to that area. We were able to take several extended vacation trips through the west and south. We were even able to visit Tom in Puerto Rico.

An opportunity to build across the road in the Pioneer woods exciting our building ambition once more. We build bigger than we needed, expecting to live there a maximum of five years. The house was very appropriate for Sally's wedding reception later. Hopefully we will be building a smaller house somewhere in the same woods this summer.

Jim graduated in Veterinary Medicine and he and Sharon moved to Kentucky. Tom had moved to Oregon where Dorothy was raised. Our children were becoming scattered. We were happy when Jim and Sharon returned a year later to put their roots down in Lima.

When Sally graduated, she came home for a month before starting her internship in Music Therapy. In those few days, she met George. It was almost love at first sight for them, culminating in their marriage the next summer.

Sometimes is was a real sacrifice for us to keep you in school, but it all seems very worthwhile now to see how you have worked at your chosen professions. We want our daughter-in-laws and son-in-law to know how very much we love them and trust your mutually shared love. But even more important than anything else we can say is that we are interested in each one's spiritual welfare. As great as success is, it is dimmed by our relationship with Jesus Christ and our future live in heaven for eternity. We want all our family (and friends) with us there.

To further complete our family, God blessed Sharon and Jim with our first granddaughter. Then a year later he blessed Tom and Dorothy with our second granddaughter. Do we have any offers for a grandson? Ha! Ha! They have truly enriched our being and we love them dearly. It is beautiful to watch them grow and learn.

Tesa graduated this year from high school and has started her first year of college at the OSU Lima branch, just as all of you did. When you read this, she will be in Brazil visiting Nise for the winter. So now Dad and I have come full circle, we are alone again--and enjoying each other.

Our family circle was made richer by sharing our home with three exchange students. Robin Garn from Germany who lived with us 9 1/2 months, returned this summer to see us for seven weeks. Nise Manicardi from Brazil stayed with us six months and stole our hearts. Still an entirely different experience awaited us with Atsuko Fukada from Japan. She lived with us for 11 months. We came to love each one of them and hope to see them all again.

This spring we realized a dream of some years. In February of 1978, we purchased Joe Pantana's barber shop at 302 Kiracofe, Elida, and Dad got his broker's license. Since I had my salesman's license since 1972 (preparing for this time) I became his secretary. After much remodeling, on March 17, 1978, Si Brenneman Real Estate opened its doors for business.

We will close this by saying how very much we love each one of you and how pleased we are with the way you are conducting your lives and the lives of those you are responsible for training. We continually pray for each one of you, your children and their children for years to come, should the old world last that long. We covet your prayers as well for our future years.

Jean Yant Brenneman's Childhood

I was the youngest of four daughters. It seemed as if I would never grow up. My sisters constantly teased me and told me I was the pet. They were just jealous. They made life miserable for me by telling me I was adopted. When I told them mom said I wasn't, they would say, "She just doesn't want you to know and she just tells you that." I spent many days in that round robin.

School was always easy and I always got good grades. I had ambition to go to college and become a certified public accountant, but that was before I met your dad. Because of moving around as Daddy built churches, I was in many different schools and learned how to make friends. But you also had to leave old ones behind.

Because I was the youngest, I became a ready babysitter for my sister's children. Most of the time I didn't mind. When they worked away from home during the war, I got paid for watching their kids during the summer.

I was a freshman in high school when Pearl Harbor happened and I remember it quite well. I do not remember too much of the depression as we were just beginning to prosper when I realized anything about economics.

We took a real long trip once (at least at the time it seemed that way) to Philadelphia and Washington D. C. I remember many of the things we saw very vividly.

My parents made me feel secure and there was lots of love in our house.

One time a man came and stole some chickens from us. Several days later the sheriff shot him dead as he picked up the chickens he had stolen from us that he left in an open field.

I can also remember huddling around a stove to keep warm, and the drift of snow that came in our living room through the cracks during the winter..but we were happy.

Mrs. Brenneman was a 1936 graduate of Gomer High School, where she played basketball, sang and won several awards. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, women's college basketball and Nextel racing. She loved her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan (Cliff) Hollar of Lima; a granddaughter, Cindy (Lowell Jr.) Chilcoat of Wapakoneta; and a great-grandson, John Thomas Chilcoat II of Wapakoneta.

He was born July 31, 1912, in Lima to Rhuda and Elnora Hilty Brenneman, who preceded him in death. On July 1, 1950, he married Elsie Hitchens, who died Feb. 3, 2001.
Mr. Brenneman had been a teacher in Scarsdale, N.Y., for 45 years. He had served as president of the Scarsdale Teachers Association and the New York State Teachers Association. He was a graduate of Goshen College, Goshen, Ind., and received his master's degree in education from The Ohio State University. He and his wife moved to Plymouth, Vt., in 1982.
Survivors include a brother, John Brenneman of Lima; a sister, Marjorie B. Richer of Archbold; seven nephews; a niece; and a sister-in-law, Elethea H. Caldwell of Scottsville, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Florence Brenneman.
Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Nov. 6 at Bethany Mennonite Church, Bridgewater, Vt. The Rev. Gwen Groff will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Ohio.

She was born Nov. 20, 1918, in DeKalb County, Ind., to Jacob A. and Alice Carnahan Gerig, who preceded her in death. On June 30, 1949, she married John M. Brenneman, who survives.
Mrs. Brenneman was a teacher for Elida schools, retiring in 1979. She was also employed by Fort Wayne schools and Lima schools. After her retirement, she and her husband founded and administered the Brenneman Residential Home. She was a member of Lima Mennonite Church.
Survivors also include two sons, Brent A. (Joanne) Brenneman, of Spencerville, and Brice B. (Lydia) Brenneman of St. Marys; a sister, Joy Gerig of Ossian, Ind.; and six grandchildren, Kendra, Kyle, Luke, Jonathan, Jameel and Joseph Brenneman.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Mennonite Church. The Rev. David Elkins will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 7, 1944, in Lima to Ralph and Caroline Smucker Brenneman. His father survives in Goshen, Ind. His mother preceded him in death on Nov. 17, 1989. On Nov. 27, 1975, in Fort Wayne, Ind., he married Dorothy Schroeder, who survives.
Mr. Brenneman retired in June 2002 as an elementary school teacher from Westview Schools, after 36 years. He was a member of Pleasant View Mennonite Church, Goshen, Ind., where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He had been the pentathlon director and co-director for 15 years for the Michiana Tournament held in April. He was a life member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He was a 1966 graduate of Goshen College and received his master's degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.
Survivors also include a son, Jevon Brenneman of Elkhart, Ind.; a daughter, Genessa (Tyler) Hartford of Toledo; a brother, Calvin Brenneman of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sisters, Nancy (Mark) Liechty and Connie (Greg) Maxwell, both of Goshen, Ind.
Memorial services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant View Mennonite Church, Goshen, Ind. The Revs. Ron Diener, Wes Culver and Michael Peak will officiate. Graveside services and burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the church cemetery.
