It is believed that the Yants originated from the German state of Hessa during the revolutionary war. It is said they came as mercenary soldiers in the place of some Britisher who could afford to pay them. Three brothers came to this shore, later splitting up to Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.
Phillip was a carpenter. He spent several years in Kansas building bridges before he was married. Later he had his own contracting business, building many houses in the Lima area. Daddy could point out many of their projects that are still there today.
He enjoyed teasing and had a funny way of sticking out his tongue. Mother said you could always tell by this if he was teasing or not. He died very suddenly of a heart attack after working a full day. I am sorry to say theirs was not a very happy home, but he tried. He was tall and slender.
Mary was a school teacher. She was the daughter of a traveling evangelist who had charge of all the Christian churches west of the Mississippi River.
She was of medium build. Sometimes she was difficult to be around and made herself unlovely. She died in the bathtub as a result of a stroke.
Phillip married Mary Minesota Lawrence, daughter of James Derious Lawrence and Mary Ann McNeal, on 23 Nov 1892. Mary Minesota was born on 13 Jan 1873, died on 23 Jun 1941 at age 68, and was buried in St. Matthews Cementary, Cridersville, Ohio, USA. The cause of her death was in bathtub as a result of a stroke.

Daddy's childhood is rather sketchy. By a picture taken of him when young, we know that he helped deliver laundry.
He grew up to be a big man physically and had a big booming voice. He was also handsome. Their house was not always a happy one, but he and his father had a special relationship. He learned the carpenter trade from him and they worked together until his father died.

John and Zelma Yant
John Yant and Zelma Stewart met at a dance on Groundhog's day (Feb. 2) in 1917. He had brought someone else to the dance, but took mother home.
Daddy and Mother enjoyed doing things together. He never liked to work alone. One time when his father, who he worked for at the time, was gone to a funeral in Pennsylvania, he insisted that mother accompany him to work. She had to sit on a nail keg and do her crocheting. When she tired of this, she asked him to let her put hardware on a cupboard. Reluctantly, he allowed it, and she did a good job. He always took her with him, even if it meant going out of his way to pick her up.
Daddy liked to cook and especially practiced his art on holidays. He saw to it that all of children learned to swim. Mother always like to play games with us children and their grandchildren.
Daddy loved mother very much and he was extremely jealous of her, even though she never gave him cause to be. He was a deputy sheriff and mother was a Girl Scout leader for a while.
Daddy's cousin, Jim Lawrence was a barber. When we lived in Columbus, we often visited them. One time they decided to cut and curl mom's hair...just the two men. She ended up with a burned ear.
Daddy worked on, remodeled and or built thirty nine churches in Ohio and several in Pennsylvania. Most of the time we lived in the Columbus or Lima area, but spent one year on a farm near Carey, Ohio. Then when he began building, we moved to the community where he was currently working until the project was completed.
They enjoyed traveling and spent several months at a time in the west or south. They put together a very good rock collection. They were planning a trip abroad when Daddy died of a pulmonary blood clot, just ten days following surgery.
Mother then moved to Indian Lake where she had a small retirement home built. She loved to work in the yard and her flowers were an enjoyment to the entire neighborhood. At age sixty, she started a new venture - painting with a knife. She took lessons and practiced her art, making everyone happy who was gifted with one of her paintings. She turned down countless offers to sell her work and made them instead for her grandchildren, family and also gave some as gifts to special friends.
She traveled a lot after Daddy died and spent three weeks in her 81st year with us in the west.

Zelma Stewart Yant's Childhood
Mother was born in Kansas. At the age of three, she came to live at Elida, at the corner of State and Dutch Hollow Roads. While still in Kansas, she was helping her sisters make mud pies. She went to fetch water for them and leaned over the water tank too far. She fell in, almost drowning. Her mother pulled her out just in time, and it was a few minutes before she could get her breath again. She never liked water after that, always being afraid she would go under - consequently, she never learned how to swim. She would go with us when we all went swimming, but never go out where she couldn't stand up. She could float, but after her brother Andrew drowned in the quarry north of Elida, she was even more afraid of the water.
She grew up with seven sisters, five of which had red curly hair. She helped around the farm, and started to school when she was only four years old and always did well.

Mother then moved to Indian Lake where she had a small retirement home built. She loved to work in the yard and her flowers were an enjoyment to the entire neighborhood. At age sixty, she started a new venture - painting with a knife. She took lessons and practiced her art, making everyone happy who was gifted with one of her paintings. She turned down countless offers to sell her work and made them instead for her grandchildren, family and also gave some as gifts to special friends.
She traveled a lot after Daddy died and spent three weeks in her 81st year with us in the west.

Zelma Stewart Yant's Childhood
Mother was born in Kansas. At the age of three, she came to live at Elida, at the corner of State and Dutch Hollow Roads. While still in Kansas, she was helping her sisters make mud pies. She went to fetch water for them and leaned over the water tank too far. She fell in, almost drowning. Her mother pulled her out just in time, and it was a few minutes before she could get her breath again. She never liked water after that, always being afraid she would go under - consequently, she never learned how to swim. She would go with us when we all went swimming, but never go out where she couldn't stand up. She could float, but after her brother Andrew drowned in the quarry north of Elida, she was even more afraid of the water.
She grew up with seven sisters, five of which had red curly hair. She helped around the farm, and started to school when she was only four years old and always did well.

Mary J. Tuttle, 88, died at 10:35 p.m. July 7, 2007, at St. Rita's Medical Center.
She was born May 6, 1919, in Sugar Creek Township to John D. and Zelma May Stewart Yant. On Feb. 28, 1939, she married John D. Tuttle, who died Jan. 16, 1994.
Mrs. Tuttle was the first woman foreman at Sheller Globe and later transferred to the engineering department. She attended Lafayette United Methodist Church, was president of the Lafayette Parent Teacher Association, and enjoyed participating in PTA school plays. She enjoyed bowling and received her amateur radio license, call sign N8RAB, when she was 72, even though she was blind. She was a seamstress and had her own gift shop and loved her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, John C. (Linda) Tuttle, of Batesville, Ind., Robert E. Tuttle, of Convoy, and Randall L. (Penny) Tuttle, of Harrod; a daughter, Sharon E. Falk, of Lima; two sisters, Ruth "Betty" Kittle, of Las Cruces, N.M., and Jean Brenneman, of Elida; nine grandchildren, Todd (Traci) Tuttle, Kevin (Julie) Tuttle, Jerry (Felice) Tuttle, Scot (Brenda) Tuttle, Mark (Mary) Tuttle, David (Beverly) Tuttle, Craig (Kerry) Tuttle, Cameron Tuttle, and Rebecca (Richard) Maxey; and 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Bruce Allen and Nate Tuttle; a great-grandson, Curtis; a sister, Helen Sullivan; a daughter-in-law, Carol Jean Aldrich Tuttle, and another daughter-in-law, Patricia Tuttle.
Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Eastside Chapel. Burial will be in Fairview-McDonald Cemetery near Jumbo.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born Feb. 12, 1985, in Lima to John C. and Carol Aldrich Tuttle. His father and stepmother, Linda Moeller Tuttle, survive in Batesville, Ind. His mother died Feb. 22, 1985.
He was a 2004 graduate of Batesville High School where he played football and wrestled. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Greensburg and was a member of its youth group. He was also a member of Young Life of Batesville. He served in the Air Force from Aug. 10, 2004, to Dec. 12, 2006. He was an F-16 avionics systems apprentice for the 4th Aircraft Maintenance Unit of the 388th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. He was also a member of the 365th Training Squadron, Tech School. He was awarded the Air Force Training Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Air Force Expeditionary Service with the Gold Border and the Iraqi Campaign Medal.
Survivors also include three brothers, Todd Nolan (Traci) Tuttle, of Englewood, Kevin Wayne (Julie) Tuttle, of Lima, and Jerry Eugene (Felice) Tuttle, of Dyess Air Force Base, Texas; a sister, Amy Lynne Shideler, of Toledo; paternal grandmother, Mary Josephine Tuttle, of Lima; maternal grandparents, Harry and Edna Moeller, of Hicksville; four nephews, Curtis Tuttle, Sydney Lewis, Jason Lewis, and Brendan (Jheralyn) Tuttle; and three nieces, Nicole Tuttle, Britany Tuttle, and Tristen Tuttle.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Allen Tuttle, and paternal grandfather, John Delbert Tuttle.
Services will begin at 7 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville, Ind., and 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima. The Rev. Ronald B. Cannon will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville, Ind., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home.
